Investigation #2: Stress, Senses & Feedback

How are you adapting to social distancing? If you are like me, social distancing has been increasing my feelings of stress and anxiety. What causes stress? Can we prevent It? We will look at a simplified system of how your body responds to stressful triggers. Little ones will use their engineering brains to design a solution to what causes them or a family-member to worry.

How do our bodies process senses? We will look at an example of my dog, Jovie, in how she detects a stimulus (knock at the door), processes internally and responds with a behavior. Grades 3-8 will explore more into sensory processing. Lastly, how does our body maintain stability? Our high school students will explore Feedback Loops and compare them to our anxiety example. They will design an experiment to determine or feedback loops bring the body back to normal (homeostasis) using their own ideas or a heart rate example.

3rd - 5th Grade:3-LS4-2: Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.3-LS4-3: Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
